Symantec on Firefox security

Slashdot has an article up on Symantec rethinking the report they did on vulnerabilities on Firefox vs. IE. Previously it concluded that IE was more secure because Microsoft declared less of the bugs that they found to be critical flaws than Mozilla did for Firefox. Symantec has now realized that vendor’s acknowledging something as a critical flaw does not influence the number of critical vulnerabilities there actually are in a given piece of software. In a fair comparison it turns out that Mozilla Firefox really is more secure.

Wow, you mean Firefox’s worst case scenario of having your browsing profile completely hosed and needing a new one set up is less of a problem of Internet Explorer’s worst case scenario of having your entire operating system hosed and needing to be reinstalled? I can’t believe that!

Theoretically, both have the very bad case scenario where malicious attackers could read files that contain things such as credit card information but it is my belief that having files corrupted is a higher level of attack then having them read, especially when some of those files are related to the operating system. Still, the Mozilla group has shown a much faster turn around time at fixing any of these types of bugs than the Internet Explorer team has (if I was smart about backing stuff up I could link this, but I accidentally deleted my “Web Stuff” bookmark folder the other week 🙁 ).

All this said, Slashdotters were quick to point out that Symantec’s turn of face may have something to do with Microsoft announcing that they will be competing with Symantec. Quite frankly, I think this is the case. Symantec has been very pro-Microsoft in the past because they did not want Microsoft to come out with something to compete with Norton anti-virus. They have seen how Microsoft jumping into any arena and including it with their operating system instantly makes them the giant in the field. It doesn’t matter if the product is better, most people will just stick with what they have. Microsoft knows that they can abuse their monopoly and get away with it (at least in the United States, the European Union seems to have a backbone). Quite frankly, this type of behavior out of Symantec, coupled with problems their software in the past, is why I do not use Norton to protect my system. Go AVP!

Transformers Movie Greenlighted

Producer Don Murphy announced that the announced Transformers Live Action Movie has officially been given the green light. Don Murphy has worked with translating comic book characters (Transformers had a comic before the cartoon or the action figures came out) into movies, having worked on Alan Moore’s From Hell and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (LXG).

I don’t know how I feel about that. The movie version of From Hell wasn’t very close to the comic book one, and the movie version of LXG wasn’t well received from what I heard (I never saw it). I know that Transformers has had a plethora of continuities, so the movie having its own continuity doesn’t bother me that much. Still, most people are going to want to see something like the first show. That said, a live action Transformers movie? That just seems so weird. Ah well, we’ll see how this goes.

Feeling Bleh

Been getting stomach aches quite a bit lately. It started out as small aches that wouldn’t last long and quickly go away. Now it’s been building up and up. This morning I woke up at 6 with a severe stomach ache. Because I couldn’t find anything in this danged house, I ran put on the clothes I had the night before and ran to the local Wilson Farms to get some Pepto-Bismol. When I got home I took a swig and tried to lay down, woke up at 8 something (which was about an hour later) with more pain. Another swig and I’m up at 10 something.

Still in pain I don’t remember what happened, but I eventually remembered that I had been noticing less sever pains in the days prior that would go away when I ate something. I had breakfast, and was feeling full after a few bites.

My whole system is reeling here, I’m groggy and want sleep, stomach is settling down but is still achey from feeling bad. Gah. I think I’m developing some stomach acid problems. 🙁

Stupid stomach.

So today I had a big bowl of pasta (my usual Sunday lunch at my grandparent’s place), followed up by a hot dog and fries and a shake from Shellors (sp.) (my usual Sunday dinner that my grandparents get me). You’d think that might bother a person with stomach acid pains? Nope. No heartburn or anything. Just hunger pains. What the heck?

Similarly, why the heck do I have to run to the restroom to urinate so danged much when I must have nothing in my system? Is my body just eating itself? Where am I getting this from? Grr.

Spider-Man 3 talk

Warning! This post will discuss spoiler information. Continue reading at your own peril.

I’ve been meaning to post this for a while, but Marvel just posted a spoiler image for the upcoming movie. Holy underwhelmed Batman! They better have some sweet special effects to make the symbiote costume look cool. As it stands this is just dull and boring.

And what’s that you say? You caught that little name listed before the villain of this movie? That’s right — Peter Parker’s very first love interest is in it! I honestly can’t understand why they are bringing her in for this movie — we already had a callback to her death scene in the first one when the Green Goblin threw Mary Jane off the bridge. What are they going to do with her, build her up so that Harry can kill her when he goes mad and becomes a Goblin (Green Goblin or Hobgoblin)? They already built up the Peter-Mary Jane movie relationship to be the Marvel Universe proper/Ultimate Universe relationship, meaning that they will have her act like her Ultimate Universe self (like Mary Jane originally used to)? This makes my head hurt. Oye.

Social Networking

I have added a link to my myspace account to the site navigation. I created the account earlier to be able to view pictures. That is still the basic purpose, but I’m trying to build up the whole social networking thing on there. I’m unsure about whether or not I should duplicate my blog posts on there or here.

I have to say, I completely HATE their options for changing the site. Basically, they have some TEXTAREAs which will basically insert almost anything you want there (there are some filters). In here you can add STYLE elements in them, meaning you’re adding STYLE elements inside the BODY element. The Web nerd in me is crying inside having to do that to modify the style of the page.

So far I’ve been invited to join two groups, but they were too lame to join. Got one spam from a “girl that is using her friend’s account that wants to meet a bf for all the great sex. To contact her send an e-mail to …”. I wonder how this will go.

UPDATE: Make that three spams. They are pretty good about them. They actually plausible too. Don’t get what the purpose is in having me add them as a friend (instead of getting my e-mail address) is though.

You Don’t Know Dick

Herobuilders has released a new Dick Cheney action figure named “You Don’t Know Dick”. Cheney comes with a shotgun and spike tipped shoes and is sculpted with his classic evil grin.

Herobuilders has an array of political leaders (which, sadly, includes Jesus — who has a sound effect feature where he speaks English) such as Hilary, Bush, Blair, Giuliani, Kerry and more. In the way of non-political figures they have an anatomically correct G.I. Joe figure, an build your own “Urban Crew” group, and even custom wedding figures.

WWE No Way Out 2006 predictions

Since my friend might be making it over for the PPV I’m just going to list my predictions instead of doing play by play.

  • Kurt Angle over the Undertaker
  • Rey Mysterio defeats Randy Orton
  • Booker T with the win over Chris Benoit
  • Bobby Lashley squashes JBL
  • MNM retaining their titles against Matt Hardy and his mystery opponent
  • Grergory Helms makes it out of the cruiserweight tornado match still the champion

I know the word going around is that they are going to have Kurt Angle against Randy Orton at Wrestlemania, but I don’t believe that WWE would actually have Rey lose after having him use Eddie Guerrero’s name so much. Rey dedicated his win in the Royal Rumble to Eddie Guerrero. He looks stupid putting that number one contender spot. Losing the shot at Wrestlemania will both weaken the Royal Rumble match and Rey Mysterio and tarnish Eddie Guerrero’s name further than the WWE has already.
